Are you struggling with your health – fatigue, digestive issues, weight, hormonal imbalance, sleep disturbance, or just don’t feel 100%?

Lyndal Harris can help!

Lyndal is a Functional Nutritionist, trained by the Nutritional Therapy Association. She sees symptoms (such as digestive, fatigue, mood, skin, hormonal, etc.) as the body’s warning signs of underlying dysfunction. By working foundationally, she addresses the underlying dysfunction and symptoms.

Lyndals RESTART program combines education, support and sugar detox into a comprehensive 5 week program.

Education – this centers on the foundations of Digestion, Blood Sugar and Healthy Fats. Lyndal educates you on the physiology of your body and how foods really work for you. This includes education on what to eat, what to avoid and gives the understanding of why. Each participant also receives a shopping list of foods and a RESTART cookbook to make your food transition easier.

Support – this includes 5 small group sessions run by Lyndal. These sessions help to guide you through the RESTART program, as well as providing a support group of people going through the program with you. Lyndal is also available via email throughout the 5 weeks, and there is also a facebook page you can join for more support and extra recipes!

Sugar Detox – this is a transition to a whole food diet. All refined foods, sugars, high glycemic and inflammatory foods are removed from the diet for a period of 3 weeks. This is not a short term diet, as you can choose to stay on it long term, or slowly reintroduce food back into your diet. Lyndal teaches you the best way of reintroducing food and how to work out if they are the right foods for you.

Lyndal has seen amazing fast tracked results for people doing this program – significant weight loss, blood glucose levels have stabilised, moods have improved, blood pressure has stabalised, digestive issues have resolved, body and joint aches and pains are reduced, hormonal issues improve and participants just feel better!

I LOVE my slow cooker. I can put all of my ingredients in 1 pot, turn it on, go to work and come home to a delicious dinner. Slow cooking is great on the tummy as well; the long cook time means less work for your digestive system. There are so many variations of flavors you can use, so experiment to find your favorites. This recipe is one of my favorites.

Ingredients:

1⁄2 sweet potato, chopped

1 tin of tomato’s (make sure there are no nasties added) or I like to use my homemade bone broth

salt and pepper to season

Directions:

Sauté onion

Add meat and vegetables

Add tinned tomato’s or broth

Turn slow cooker to low, put on lid and allow to simmer all day

April 7th is World Health Day and we wanted to celebrate by talking about what health means to us.

The dictionary describes health as “the general condition of the body or mind with reference to soundness and vigor” or “soundness of body or mind; freedom from disease or ailment”. We may think we are in perfect health, completely unawares of an underlying, or dormant condition that appears suddenly. There are some conditions or illnesses that are beyond our ability to control.

Conversely, eating a slice of pizza does not an unhealthy person make, however it is our continued actions, activities, diets, etc, that help to create the level of health we achieve. That one slice of pizza may not have had much impact on our overall health, yet that same action repeated over ten years can be detrimental. Functional Nutrition is about finding those habits, and often times they are ones we don’t even realise are bad for us, and eliminating them.

Your body (at the cellular level) is made from and runs on the nutrients you get from your food. We have all heard the saying we are what we eat – but we literally and physiologically are what we eat! If we eat foods that are highly processed, loaded with preservatives and other non-foods we don’t feel so good. If we eat foods that are vibrant and vital then we are vibrant and vital. I felt this in my own body and I see this everyday in the people I work with. Eating real, nutrient dense food is fundamental to feeling well.
Function Nutrition is not only about identifying the foods that are detrimental to your health and eliminating them, its also about educating you on the right foods. We are constantly bombarded with advertisements of fat free, sugar free, gluten and dairy free, but we are’t properly educated on the correct foods to eat.

My goal as a nutritionist is to provide education about the ‘why’ (why I should or shouldn’t eat that) behind the ‘what’ (what I should and shouldn’t eat). I truly believe that when we understand how our body responds with food we are able to make conscious and informed decisions. It is not about feeling guilty, or beating ourselves up for having the pizza, its about having the right information to make conscious decisions about which foods make us feel great and which ones don’t.

Why is it when you give up sugar, you find it hard to stay away from it? Or even after giving up sugar, you still experience fatigue, yoyo energy, cravings, or that 3pm slump?
The answer: A diet high in refined and processed foods and with minimal healthy, whole foods.

Blood sugar imbalance is epidemic. I see the far reaching consequences for my clients such as foggy brain, fatigue, sleeplessness, cravings, headaches, weight gain, mood instability, hormonal disruption, stress, diabetes, adrenal fatigue, etc. The good news is that once our blood sugar is balanced our symptoms go away and we get back our energy and vitality!

Why do so many people have imbalanced blood sugar?
The obvious answer is that we eat sugar, but what about when we remove sugar from our diet? The not so obvious answer is that we eat refined foods. Refined foods simply means that food has been processed in such a way that the nutrient content has been removed.
As an example, lets look at grains. The outer layer of the grain is where the nutrients are at. Unfortunately most grains are processed so that the nutritional content is no longer present. These refined grains become cereal, white flour, pastas, noodles, biscuits and pastries, etc. Grains naturally contain fibre and nutrients, as well as glucose. These nutrients slow down the metabolism of the glucose. Without that nutritional component they metabolise purely as a glucose. Eating these nutrient devoid foods not only fails to nourish us, but it also spikes our blood sugar – much like sugar.

What can you do to fix this?
Remove refined foods from your diet and replace them with nourishing whole foods such as complex carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats.
